Shirley Louise (Frost) Dastrup

February 23, 1930 — March 20, 2026

Shirley Louise Frost Dastrup was born February 23, 1930, in Huntington Park, Los Angeles, California. She passed away March 20, 2026, at the age of 96, in Grants Pass, Oregon.

After serving a 2-year mission back in 1950 in Texas and Louisiana for her church, she was introduced to her future husband through a blind date set up by her then-future brother-in-law.

Shirley and Orvill were married September 18, 1953, and made Glendale, California, their home for nearly 28 years before they moved to Grants Pass, Oregon, and built their dream home.

During those 63 years that Shirley and Orvill were married, they had 5 children: 4 boys and 1 girl; Steven of St. George, Utah; Linda Dastrup Ameling of Grants Pass, Oregon; Mark of Grants Pass (preceded her in death; Timothy of Menan, Idaho; and Thomas of Grants Pass, Oregon.

While Shirley was raising her 5 children, she also taught piano. She also was very active in politics during the time when Ronald Reagan was governor of California.

She enjoyed quilting, Cub Scouts, vegetable gardening, and growing flowers. Between California and Oregon, she has been the organist in her church for over 8½ decades, directing and putting on concerts with a choir size of 50-70 people.

She continued to play the piano and organ, and direct the music at church, as well as garden, even after she broke her hip at 87. At 93, she broke her ankle, and when she turned 95 and broke her other ankle, she then decided to slow down. It wasn't easy keeping up with her energy and dreams.

One of her favorite comments to others would have to be, "I will die with my bootstraps on," and that she did, right up to the end.

Regardless of the outlook in life, she would remind her children to "plant your cherry trees" and be positive.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Collins Orton Frost and La Fawn Reed Frost; one of her sons, Mark Dastrup; and her loving husband, Orville. Dastrup, of 63 years.

She leaves behind two sisters, Carol Frost Kilkenny of Idaho and Colleen Frost Swan of Utah; 4 children; 11 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
