Merle Melvin Converse

March 19, 1948 — June 8, 2021

Merle Melvin Converse, age 73, of Wolf Creek, died June 8, 2021 at his home.

Born March 19, 1948 in Grants Pass, Merle was raised on a farm which gave him fond memories of fresh bread, cream, and a love for country life. He attended Grants Pass High School and then Canadian Bible College graduating with a Bachelors in Theology. Highlights of his college years were a mission trip to Peru, where he floated down the Amazon with Tom Sawyer (a missionary, not the one from Twain’s book), and multiple choir tours. Singing was a lifelong passion for him. After college he served as a pastor for a few years both in Bly and Crawfordsville, Oregon. Then he moved into sawmill work which led to a career as an industrial electrician.

He and Susan Parsons were married after graduation and spent the next 49 years together. Raising their three children, life was filled with camping, 4-H activities, and training in what everyone ought to know, namely, how to work, how to treat people, and how to live. His grandchildren benefitted from the same attention.

Muscular dystrophy was a continual companion to his adult life. This presented many challenges but also sharpened his character. He leaned on God. He was a humble man, a hard worker and the kindest sort of person you could wish to meet. Anyone who met him could see the light of God shining through him.

Merle served as an elder at Wolf Creek Alliance Community Church; Child Evangelism teacher; and part of the Hymns and Hers Community Choir. He volunteered as an EMT and also on the Board of Directors for Wolf Creek Rural Fire.

His hobbies included woodworking, coin collecting, home remodeling, beekeeping, and a rain gauge watcher.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Converse; children Anna LaCoe, Merlene Converse and David Converse; sister Sylvia Bailey; brothers Dick Converse and Dan Converse; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Wilber & Helen Converse; his brothers Alan Converse and Wayne Converse.

A memorial service will be 5:00 p.m., June 16, 2021 at Wolf Creek Alliance Community Church, 130 Main Street, Wolf Creek. Private interment will be at Wolf Creek Cemetery.
