Erma May Downing, age 94, of Grants Pass, died October 27, 2025 at her home.
Erma May Downing was born on March 30, 1931, and spent most of her growing-up years in Ontario, Oregon. As a young girl, she came to faith in Christ through listening to a children’s radio program about eight years-old; a moment that shaped her lifelong devotion to serving others and sharing her faith.
After graduating from Ontario High School, Erma completed a year of community college before moving to San Luis Obispo, California, where she worked as a nanny. It was there that she met the love of her life, Robert “Bob” Downing. The two were married on May 11, 1951, and shared a beautiful life together.
During Bob’s service in the U.S. Navy and the Federal Aviation Administration meant the family moved often, building lasting memories in each place they called home. Together they raised five children and later adopted a daughter while living in Alaska.
Erma and Bob also opened their hearts and home to many children through foster care during their retirement years, leaving a legacy of compassion and love.
A woman of deep faith, Erma devoted many years to volunteering with Child Evangelism Fellowship and teaching children’s ministry at Gasquet Bible Church, where she joyfully served for nearly 60 years. She took joy in gardening, canning, and connecting with and caring for children, pursuits that reflected her nurturing spirit and love for God and His creation.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Downing, and sons Paul Howe Downing and Peter Downing, and daughter Lorraine Davis.
Erma is survived by her son James (Suzie) Downing, daughters Nancy DeJesus and Salena Cox, nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Erma’s life was a testament to faith, family, and service. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., November 29, 2025 at Jerome Prairie Bible Church.
A private interment will be held at Eagle Point National Cemetery.
