Elaine Francis Bessey (Anderson), age 94, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2025, in Portland, Oregon. A gifted musician and dedicated educator, Elaine’s life was a celebration of relationships, resilience, and lifelong learning.
Born on December 29, 1930, in Glendale, California, to Ethel and George Anderson, Elaine’s love for music began early and guided her throughout her life. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Whitworth College and a Master of Music from Northeastern University—academic achievements that led to an impactful career spanning more than 35 years as a choral director in public schools across Spokane WA, Michigan, and Coos Bay OR.
Elaine’s classrooms were filled with warmth and inspiration. She had a rare ability to connect with students, encouraging their growth through both music and mentorship. Beyond the classroom, she continued to share her talents as a classically trained soprano and accomplished pianist. She performed as a soloist with orchestras and in productions such as Quilters, The Sound of Music, and Amahl and the Night Visitors.
Those who knew Elaine remember her as super friendly—always genuinely interested in others’ lives—and as someone who made everyone feel seen and heard. She had a special gift for listening without judgment and offering wisdom when it was needed most. Independent and strong-willed throughout her life, Elaine overcame polio as a teenager—a challenge that instilled resilience which carried her through many physical hardships later on.
Devoted to sacred music, Elaine served as a church musician throughout her life—singing solos, directing choirs, and playing piano. Handel’s Messiah held special meaning for her and was among the many sacred works she performed with joy.
Elaine also taught private voice and piano lessons into her eighties. Her home was filled with music and laughter—echoes of lessons shared with generations of students.
She is lovingly remembered by her son Eric Bessey; daughter Molly Jo Rivelli; son-in-law Christopher Rivelli; and grandson Nicholas Rivelli, sister Janice Weakley, sister-in-law Linda Anderson, and many additional family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Ronald Anderson.
A memorial service celebrating Elaine’s life will be held at a later date.
Elaine leaves behind a legacy of music that touched countless lives—through every note sung or played, every student taught, every choir led. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew her and continue to inspire all who carry forward the love of music she so generously shared.
Private interment at Hawthorne Memorial Gardens.
Please share a memory of Elaine in her Guestbook.
