Charlotte Johnson

June 21, 1928 — January 19, 2023

Mrs. Charlotte Heine Johnson passed away January 19, 2023 at her home.

Charlotte was born June 21, 1928 in the city of Bochum, Germany. She lived with her parents until after World War II, when they requested assistance by the Red Cross for her to be sent to the United States of America. She lived with an aunt and uncle in Hesperia, California.

While she was attending college to learn how to speak English and learn American customs, she met and married Merle Almer Johnson. They were married on February 25, 1951 in Victorville, California. They lived in Victorville for many years before moving to Grants Pass, Oregon in 1962. Charlotte became a US citizen on May 21, 1963.

Charlotte was a homemaker, and a retail sales associate in apparel. She was able to pursue her first love, playing the organ and piano in local churches. For most of her adult life she played music for church services, weddings, and memorial services at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and Calvary Lutheran Church in Grants Pass. She was very involved in church activities such as choir, bell choir, women’s guild and many others.

Charlotte was an avid knitter and crocheted sweaters, vests and all types of hats and crafts for local bazaars and fundraisers. She also knitted or crocheted many sweaters for her daughters-in-law and grandkids, and many other friends and family.

Charlotte is survived by her sons David Johnson (Aubra) of Grants Pass, Oregon, Bruce Johnson of White City, Oregon, Christopher Johnson (Hillary) of Langlois, Oregon and Kirk Johnson (Isabel) of Vancouver, Washington; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Merle Johnson, and a grandchild.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, February 4, 2023, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 865 NW 5th Street, Grants Pass, OR 97526. Lunch will be provided immediately following the memorial service. All are invited to attend.
