Walter "George" Fence

Walter “George” Fence, 73, of Grants Pass, Oregon passed away peacefully in his home on the evening of October the 27th, 2014. He was in the company of his wife Evelyn Joyce Fence and spent his final moments speaking with his daughter Ashley Meredith Schilling. George was born on January, 6th 1941 in Carmel, California. He served in the United States Army from 1958 - 1962, and enjoyed a long and adventurous career on the railroad with Southern Pacific Transportation. George dedicated his life after retirement to activism and education. He was a proud member of the Cherokee Nation, a storyteller, a carrier of cultural wisdom, a social and political activist and a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend to his community. His insight, his courage, his humor and laughter will be carried on in the hearts of the family that survives him. We are all blessed with a gift that can never be lost to have been a part of his time here on earth. A memorial service and pot luck, open to all who were touched by George's life, will be held at the Redwood Grange in Grants Pass, Oregon on Saturday, November 22nd from 3:30-6:30 pm. George is survived by his wife Evelyn Joyce Fence, his 4 children Heather Katherine Huckert, Jesse Alexander Fence, Jonah Michael Fence, and Ashley Meredith Schilling, as well as his 5 grandchildren and his step daughter Christina Grace Hugo.
