She was born April 19, 1916 in Fairview Township, Shelby County, Iowa. She was the oldest of six children and grew up on a farm. In 1944 she joined the U.S. Navy. After basic training at the U.S. Naval Training School in Bronx, New York she served at the USNAS in Hutchinson, Kansas. Viola was honorably discharged in 1946 having earned the rating of Ships cook 3rd class. Having experienced a sufficient number of Midwest winters by that time, Viola completed her education and business training and moved to Los Angeles, California after WW II.

Viola worked for the Rexall Drug Company in the accounting department as a comptometer operator and analyst from 1947 to 1955. She left the company for eight years to care for her mother back in Iowa. She returned to California and Rexall/Dart Industries in 1963 eventually retiring in 1979. She moved to Grants Pass, Oregon to be near family after her retirement.

She was an expert knitter and seamstress, joined the Rogue Craftsmen Guild and participated in the charitable Caps for Kids program. Viola was known as “Aunt Tuttie” to a multitude of nieces and nephews and their children; all of whom probably have at least one of her knitted or crocheted sweaters or blankets. She enjoyed travel throughout her life and drove a series of “little white cars” through all the western states, across the southern states to the East Coast, up to Canada, and across Canada. Bon Voyage, Aunty!

Survivors include a brother, John Juhl of Omaha, Nebraska; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Arlene Tappan and Lillian Vorthmann; and brothers, Edward Juhl and Daniel Juhl.
