December 17, 1941 — January 17, 2010

Suzi Butz, age 68, of Grants Pass, died Sunday, January 17, 2010 at her home.

She was born Eloise Suzanne Horton on December 17, 1941 in Mobile, Alabama to Cecyl & Barbara Horton. As a small child she moved with her family to California where at the age of three was enrolled in ballet school. At age seven Suzi was diagnosed with polio which affected her health for the rest of her life. She attended an all-girls school and graduated at age 15. She helped operate her mother’s answering service business and worked as a cook and waitress when she met her future husband in Big Bear, California. On November 30, 1965 in Nevada she married Albert Stephen Butz and in the spring of 1966 moved to Haines, Alaska. In Haines they homesteaded five acres, clearing the land and using everything to build a house. They raised pigs and grew a very large garden. On December 22, 1967 a daughter, Jeannette Butz was born. Suzi was very religious and in between praying for everyone and giving the shirt off her back, she worked as a cook and waitress at a caf. She was also always on call to help with being a birthing coach to many of the baby’s born in Haines. On January 12, 1979 her husband Albert died and in 1980 Suzi bought a Bible book store and a health food store to bring together her two loves, God and health. She also ran a youth hostel in Haines where she got to meet many people from all around the world. On September 20, 1980 Suzi married Robert Tarbuskovich. In 1986 they sold all three and moved to Oregon to help care for her ailing grandparents and in 1989 she and Robert divorced. Suzi worked at Health Haven health food store and the Inn Between before her health made it too hard to work away from home. She then babysat at home and helped care for her two grandchildren, Juanita and Albert. As her health declined over the last six months, she enjoyed her new great-grandson, Steven and was looking forward to a great-granddaughter, LeAna due in April.

Suzi volunteered as an ombudsman in the early 1990s and also volunteered with Lovejoy Hospice.

She enjoyed cooking and feeding people was her job in life that she felt was her true calling.

Survivors include a daughter, Jeannette Butz; two grandchildren, Juanita Butz and Albert Butz; and two great-grandchildren, Steven Hart and LeAna Hart (due in April 2010).
