Shirley Philson (Mccullough) Rothkamm

Shirley Philson (McCullough) Rothkamm, age 90, of Grants Pass, died Thursday, August 14, 2014 at her home.

A graveside service for family and friends will be at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, August 28, 2014 at Eagle Point National Cemetery. A gathering will be held at Shirley’s home immediately following. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors of Grants Pass are in charge of arrangements.

Shirley was born to Rexford McCullough and Marie (Going) McCullough on September 9, 1923 in Franklin, Louisiana. Her family moved to Lafayette, Louisiana where she attended and graduated Lafayette High School in 1940. She enrolled in University of Louisiana Lafayette, formally known as Southwestern Louisiana Institute. She majored in music and played the trumpet in the college band; she graduate in 1944 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. “Go Ragin’ Cajuns”!

On November 14, 1945 she married Warren Glenn Rothkamm in Lafayette, Louisiana. Shirley became a teacher in 1945, teaching various grades. She also worked at the local post office and bank in Lafayette. Warren and Shirley had three daughters. They moved their family to Grants Pass, Oregon in 1966. During those years Shirley was a housewife, mother, and co-owner in their plumbing business. She loved to bowl and was bowler of the year; Shirley hit those 300 games all the time. She loved to dance, especially the jitterbug and during the 1960s’ and 70’s she enjoyed square dancing and round dancing with her husband Warren. Shirley loved fishing and crabbing with her family; she made a delicious gumbo. She was also a softball coach, PTA mom, donated her time to her children’s activities and fundraising, and then continued with supporting her grandchildren’s activities and sports.

Shirley is survived by three daughters: Peggy L. Hassan of Sunriver, Oregon, H. Gail Hundley of Gresham, Oregon and Rebecca A. Tappan of Grants Pass, Oregon. Shirley has eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren with one on the way.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren Glenn Rothkamm, her parents, five brothers and one sister.
