Shirley Ann Bates, age 79, of Grants Pass, died Friday, July 22, 2011 at her home.

A Celebration of Life will be at 12:00 Noon, Friday, August 26, 2011 at Reinhart Park, Harry and David Shelter. Refreshments will be served. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

Shirley was born September 19, 1931 in Pasadena, California to Florence & Nicholas Baker. On December 12, 1952 in Los Angeles she married Richard A. Bates. They lived in Modjeska Canyon, California for 21 years and moved to Grants Pass, Oregon in 2000.

Shirley was a member of the Elks in both Garden Grove, California and Grants Pass Oregon BPOE.

Her hobbies included playing cards with her friends, going on the RV campout trips with the Elks, and traveling to many domestic and overseas destinations with her husband and friends.

In addition to her husband, Richard A. Bates of Grants Pass, Oregon; she is survived by a son, Richard A. Bates and daughter-in-law, Denise Bates of Hillsboro, Oregon; a brother, Robert Baker of Fremont, California; two grandchildren, Jason Bates of Pasadena, Maryland and Valynda Phifer of Las Vegas, Nevada; three great-grandsons, Lucas Phifer, Isaac Phifer, and Simon Phifer all of Las Vegas, Nevada; and a stepdaughter, Robin Long of Tustin, California and her son, Thomas Loucks, and her daughter, Laura Smith who have children, Evan Loucks, Brook Loucks, Emma Smith and Stella Smith.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Beverly.
