Samuel "Walt" Mickey

Samuel “Walt” Mickey, age 74, of Cave Junction, died Sunday, October 18, 2009 at his home.

A funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 24, 2009 at Illinois Valley Funeral Directors with Pastor Monty Pope officiating. Interment will follow at Laurel Cemetery.

Remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society, 31 W 6th Street, Medford, Oregon 97501.

He was born November 1, 1934 in Quemado, New Mexico to Samuel Watson Mickey & Hazel Deette (Shough) Mickey. In 1948 he moved to the Illinois Valley where he attended local schools. In 1954 he left the area and returned in 1994. He worked as a surveyor for over 30 years.

He was a member of the Operating Engineers local #3 and #701 and a member of the Eagles for several years. For five years he served on the Laurel Cemetery Board.

He loved his cowboy hat and boots and enjoyed playing with his dog, Josh.

Survivors include two sons, Samuel Lee Mickey and wife, Terri of Yakima, Washington and Christopher Lorin Mickey and wife, Amy of St. George, Utah; eight sisters, Deette St. John of Hermiston, Oregon, Jewell Hubbard of Central Point, Fern Brown of Yuba City, California, Tillie Shaw of Medford, Oregon, Nellie Martinez of Hermiston, Oregon, Mary Ann Mickey of Pearson, Arkansas, Jean Lundford of Russellville, Arkansas, and Laurel Day of Phoenix, Arizona; two brothers, Dan Mickey of Eagle Point, Oregon and Charley Mickey of Cave Junction, Oregon; and six grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Rita Mickey on July 16, 2006 and a daughter, Lorianne Mickey.
