S. Tony Zarbano

S. Tony Zarbano, age 88, of Roseburg, died Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at his home.

Tony was born August 27, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois and grew up in Omaha, Nebraska where he attended North High School. He married Glenna Haines in Elizabeth City, North Carolina on September 6, 1947. Tony entered the United States Navy in 1945 and served four years in the Atlantic. Unable to find work after his discharge, he enlisted in the United States Army in 1950, serving three years during the Korean Conflict. Tony completed a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice at the University of Southern California in 1956. From 1956 to 1963, Tony served the County of Los Angeles, California as a Deputy Sheriff, advancing to the position of Detective. In 1963, Tony became the Chief of Police for the City of North Bend, Oregon. In 1964, he initiated the Criminal Justice Program at Southwestern Oregon Community College in Coos Bay, Oregon. He was instrumental in expanding the program statewide in Oregon. In 1970, Tony was elected to the position of Sheriff for the County of Coos in Oregon. During his tenure as Sheriff, Tony wrote a grant to the Department of Health Education and Welfare to procure a Helicopter Rescue Program for Coos County, Oregon. Tony’s last civil service position was Administrative Officer, for the Office of Local Assistance, Department of General Services for the state of California. Tony retired in 1991 and traveled the United States with his wife, Glenna, in their motor home until they settled in Roseburg, Oregon in 1997.

Tony was a volunteer for the Department of Fish and Wildlife and a member of The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and Sons of Italy.

Tony enjoyed fishing, hunting, carpentry and wood turning.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Glenna Zarbano of Roseburg; five children, Anthony Zarbano and wife Rachel of Veneta, Oregon, Vicki Popoff and husband Peter of Newberg, Oregon, Patricia Burton and husband Roy of Roseburg, Dianne Thornton and husband Kevin of Las Vegas, Nevada and Kenneth Zarbano and wife Jody of Roseburg; two sisters, Mary Schultz and Virginia Barton, both of LaPalma, California; 16 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his father, mother and a brother.

A memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 21, 2016 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds in Roseburg, Oregon. Private interment with military funeral honors will be held at Roseburg National Cemetery. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made to the Tristan Case Eagle Scout Project, a memorial to be built honoring fallen officers of Douglas County.
