RUTH V. CONSTABLE 1917-2009

Ruth V. Constable, 30 year Illinois Valley resident, passed away on 1/21/09 at Takilma. She was known and loved by many in the Valley. She was devoted to her community, active in the 'Salt' program, Friends of the Library, Garden Club, Women’s Club, Foster Grandparents program, as a docent at the Kerby Museum, and many of the local schools as an aide and helper. She was also Cave Junction's most active cowbell ringer at sporting events.

A descendent of California pioneers, she was born in Ogden, Utah, on December 25th, 1917. She was a graduate of Alameda High School, in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her childhood was spent in many cities and towns across the country. Her young married years were spent in the Bay Area where she instilled a love of music, literature and independence in her children, to whom she was devoted. Ruthie lived in Santa Cruz, CA, from 1953-1973, where she continued raising her family. She made many friends in the close knit community of Plum and Owen streets. She was president of the PTA's of Gault School, Branciforte Junior High, and Santa Cruz High School. For many years she was a den mother for Cub Scouts and a leader for Campfire Girls. She had a great wit about her: she once threw a 'tacky party' where the invitees (the teachers at Gault School) wore funny over-the-top duds and outfits. She lived her life her way and she colored outside the lines. She was an active and knowledgeable participant in many endeavors throughout her life, and she will be missed by all who loved her and were touched by her generosity of spirit.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Karl and Amy Vesper, her sister Grethe Vesper, her husbands Frank Pennell and Russell Constable, her grandson Trevor Rasmussen, and many dear friends. She is survived by her daughter Frances Hayes of Grand Junction, CO, sons Richard (Cynthia) Pennell of Morgan Hill, CA, Patrick Pennell of Cave Junction, OR, and Mark Constable (Gale) of Salem, OR. Also her grandchildren Leslie, Willow, Amee, Zackaria, Gabriel, Jededia, Jason, and Alex. Also her great-grandchildren Haleigh, Kelsie, Kamryn, Althea-Lynne, Kalani, Madison, Isabella, and Hudson.

Her family will always remember with deep gratitude caregiver Sally Cumberworth and her family, and the staff and residents of Hopeful Rancho for their loving care in the last days of Ruthie's long life. Also the kindness of Bryan Lingg and Eileen McLean of Illinois Valley Funeral Directors.

Cremation has taken place and a Memorial will be held in the Spring.
