Richard J. Hackbarth

Richard J. Hackbarth, age 75, of Cave Junction, died Friday, April 27, 2012 at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

A celebration of life will be at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, May 19, 2012 at Immanuel United Methodist Church in Cave Junction. Private inurnment will be at Eagle Point National Cemetery. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Immanuel United Methodist Church, PO Box 314, Cave Junction, Oregon 97523.

Richard was born February 28, 1937 in Brainerd, Minnesota to Ernest & Helen Hackbarth. He was a 1955 graduate of Balboa High School in San Francisco. After graduating he worked full-time for Hewlett Packard in Palo Alto, California in the machine shop. He enlisted in the United States Army and served from 1957 to 1959. While serving in Germany he played pitcher for the Army baseball team. After being honorably discharged he worked as a baker in San Jose and Truckee, California. Most of his life he worked as a delivery driver for Pepsi, Olympia Beer and Frito Lay in San Jose, California. On July 2, 1977 in San Jose he married his wife, Marilynn. In 1978 they moved from San Jose to Cave Junction where he worked for Rough and Ready before retiring in 1990. He then owned and operated Poor Richard’s Hot Dog Stand which operated at various locations in Cave Junction over the years.

Richard was a member of the Illinois Valley Senior Center where he volunteered his time driving the senior bus. For eight years he volunteered as a bread sorter for local food banks.

Richard enjoyed watching baseball, especially the Atlanta Braves; loved to tell stories and made fast friends with everybody; enjoyed working with children and coached the Kerby Electric Little League Team in Cave Junction, a Little League Team in Lake Tahoe, California and a Little League Team in San Jose, California; loved to bake; and especially enjoyed playing cribbage.

Survivors include his wife, Marilynn A. Hackbarth of Cave Junction, Oregon; a son, Rick Hackbarth of Tahoma, California; a daughter, Barbara Hackbarth of Sacramento, California; two stepdaughters, Celeste Trepanier of Arcata, California and Rene Blumenthal of McKinleyville, California; a stepson Richard Trepanier of San Jose, California; a sister, Debbie McCurry of Chico, California; a brother, Vernon Massengale of Chico, California; 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Hackbarth and a sister, Carol Henthorne.
