Regina "Bernice" Hinsley

Regina “Bernice” Hinsley, age 88, of Grants Pass, died Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at Spring Pointe Specialty Care Center.

Private inurnment will be at Hawthorne Memorial Gardens. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

She was born on February 25, 1921 in Valentine, Nebraska to Julius & Mary Ruther. She was raised in Nebraska as a farm girl. In 1938, she married Martin Phillis who died in 1944 during World War II at the Battle of the Bulge. She raised her two young sons alone until she met and married Joseph Hinsley in 1946. Together they had another son and daughter. In 1974 they moved from Norwalk in Southern California to Grants Pass.

Her hobbies included canning, cooking, vegetable gardening and landscaping. She loved her two dogs, “Wonder” and “Rosa Mae”. While living in Southern California she was active on a bowling league.

Survivors include her husband, Joseph Hinsley of Grants Pass; two sons, Gary Lee Phillis of Beaverton, Oregon, Bob Hinsley of Grants Pass; a daughter, Bonita Jo Hinsley of Grants Pass; eight grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death was her former husband; and her son, Larry Joe Phillis, who died in 1991.
