Alice Maxine Rand was born March 12, 1920 in Roseburg, Oregon, the youngest of ten. One of her seven brothers said “You can name her Alice, but she’ll be called “Maxine” and so she was. She lived and attended school in Roseburg until she entered college at what is now Southern Oregon University.
Her brother, Homer Rand, worked as a butcher with Hugh Burt who Maxine married. They lived in Medford and later moved to Grants Pass. Two daughters were born to them, Monna and Marcia. They moved to Roseburg to care for Maxine’s elderly parents and Maxine started teaching first grade. In 1952, the family moved to the Los Angeles area. Because of a shortage of teachers she was asked to teach school in Lawndale, California. Maxine and Hugh divorced in 1960. She continued teaching and raising her two girls as a single mom. In the 1980’s she married Jack Levine and they lived in Pasadena. After retiring they moved to Palm Desert where they lived until returning to Oregon where Jack died.

Maxine attended the Grants Pass Unity Church where she met and married George Hanback. After George died, her grandson, Damon Barr, moved in to care for her.

She always had a spiritual interest and was loved by everyone who knew her.

Survivors include two daughters, Monna Lee Burt Norgauer of Williams, Oregon and Marcia Rae Burt Ferrie of Selma, Oregon; three grandchildren, Damon Alan Barr of Grants Pass, Oregon, Tara Lynn Ferrie Thornhill of Selma, Oregon and Tanya Rene Ferrie of Eugene, Oregon; seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Nancy Rand of Grants Pass, Oregon.
