Maxine Helen Newton

Maxine Helen Newton, age 90, of Grants Pass, died Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at her home.

She was born December 15, 1924 in Weleetka, Oklahoma to Andrew & Florence Reid and grew up in Jerusalem, Arkansas. She lived in Texas, Arizona, California and Oregon. In the 1960s she worked in the fish, crab and shrimp plants in Crescent City, California where she lived for over 30 years. In the 1980s she began working as a caregiver to the elderly in Crescent City and continued to do so after moving to Grants Pass in 1988. In 2001 she retired.

Maxine attended Bethel Christian Center since 1995 where she participated in church activities.

In her younger days, Maxine enjoyed going to the beach to hunt and collect agates and would then polish them in her rock polisher before making jewelry out of the agates. She also enjoyed embroidery, sewing, baking, cooking, and gardening.

Survivors include her children, Bobby Newton and wife Angel of Crescent City, Jerry Newton and wife Linda of Crescent City, Irwin Newton and wife Lori of Lenoir, North Carolina, Gail Wright of Granite Falls, North Carolina and Deaunna Newton of Grants Pass; brother, James Reid of Jerusalem, Arkansas; ten grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ira E. Newton; brother, Lawrence “Dooger” Reid; and sister, Geraldine Massey.

A viewing will be from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday, February 9, 2015 at Hull & Hull Funeral Directors.

A funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at Hull & Hull Chapel. Interment will follow at Granite Hill Cemetery.
