Mavis "Mary" Smith

Mavis “Mary” Smith, 83, of Grants Pass, died Thursday, May 25, 2006 at Three Rivers Community Hospital.

A celebration of Mary''s life will be at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, May 30, 2006 at River Valley Community Church with David Mathis and Jim Christian conducting. Southern Oregon Cremation Services are in charge of arrangements.

She was born on September 27, 1922 in Stuart, Iowa. On April 1, 1950 she married Russell G. Smith, who survives. In 1952 she and her husband moved to Grants Pass from Whittier, California. For 15 years she was childcare supervisor at the Caveman Bowling Alley. She enjoyed her retirement by RV camping with fellow snowbirds in Arizona for 14 years.

Mary was a member of River Valley Community Church, Challenger Class; and Allen Creek Estates Bible Study. She also did volunteer work at Highland House and Heart and Hand.

She enjoyed cooking, reading, bowling, camping and sewing. Mary especially enjoyed playing cards with family and friends.

In addition to her husband, Russell G. Smith of Grants Pass; survivors include her daughter, Lorrie Snyder and her husband Toby of Grants Pass; her two sons, Bruce Smith and his wife Lyla of Battle Ground, Washington; and Jerry Smith and Stephanie of Grants Pass; two brothers, George Mowell; and Byron Mowell; five granddaughters; and six great-grandchildren.

Her brother Doran Mowell and newborn daughter, Cheryl Smith preceded her in death.
