Mary Alice Suttle

February 16, 1922 — May 25, 2012

Former Rogue River resident, Mary Alice Suttle, age 90, of Glendale, died Friday, May 25, 2012 at her daughter’ s home in Glendale.

No services are planned. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

Mary was born February 16, 1922 in Evanston, Illinois to William & Hazel deFreitas. In 1939 she graduated from Evanston High School. Together with her sister, Ruth, she owned and operated, Petite Salon Millinery & Accessories in Highland Park, Illinois. After moving to San Diego, California in 1962 she worked for La Boutique, a dress and hat shop in La Jolla, California and was a homemaker. In 1980 she went to work for Scripps Memorial Hospital as a private food server. In 1990 she moved with her daughter and son-in-law from California to Rogue River, Oregon where she opened, Crafty Creations a shop she operated until she decided to focus her attention to being a children’s advocate. Among other things, she took in children in need and filled her automobile trunk with gifts at Christmas time for Southern Oregon Head Start children. She lived her life by the quote, “100 years from now, it will not matter what kind of car I drove, bank account I had, or house I lived in, what will matter is I made a difference in the life of a child.” She lived each and every day to the fullest.

Mary was a member of “another mother for peace,” an organization during the 60s that believed war was not healthy for children and other living things.

While living in Rogue River, she was a member of the Hillary Clinton Support Network.

Her hobbies included helping children, designing and making hats, sewing, playing scrabble and crossword puzzles. She was also a published author of poems.

Survivors include two daughters, Debby Edgington of Glendale, Oregon and Lori Armstrong of Rogue River, Oregon; a son, Jeffery Suttle of Cardiff, California; a brother, William deFreitas of Rogue River, Oregon; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David M. Suttle.
