Martha Clay Mcdonough

Martha Clay McDonough, age 93, of Grants Pass, died Thursday, March 27, 2014 at Highland House Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

Private family services will be held. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

She was born Martha McCrae on April 11, 1920 at Ten Mile Creek, south of Yachats, Oregon to Robert & Mary (Stevens) McCrae. At age four, the family moved to Rath Creek, north of Sutton Lake and Florence, Oregon. She attended Ocean View School. In 1936 at Myrtle Point, Oregon she married Don Clay who died April 1990. In September 1992 she married Jim McDonough who died March 17, 1996.

During her working years she planted trees for the U.S. Forest Service and BLM; logged poles and peeled them; picked huckleberry brush to sell; worked in gladiola bulb and the hop fields; and worked at Laurel Hill and Royal Gardens Nursing Homes.

Martha loved the outdoors. She was a Siuslaw Pioneer who loved gold panning, hunting, fishing and raising a big garden to can and freeze and divide with family and friends.

Martha is survived by three children, Donna Walton of Clear Lake, California, Carl Clay of Merlin, Oregon and Celia Berry of Grants Pass; 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ruth Sumich of Springfield, Oregon.

Two husbands; a grandson, Darren Seagoe; two brothers and two sisters died before her.
