Madie completed her elementary/secondary schooling in 1930 she then entered North Eastern Oklahoma State College, where she completed three years during the midst of the Great Depression. In 1934 she married Virgil Humphrey, a young man whom her parents helped raise during his teen years. Madie gave birth to her first son, Donald, in July 1935. Two years later, Madie, Virgil and Donald joined the great migration from Oklahoma to California where work could be found. In 1938 she gave birth to her second son, Robert, in Arvin, California.
