Lucy Virginia Edwards

October 21, 1922 — December 2, 2008

Lucy Virginia Edwards, died on December 2, 2008 after living a long and full life of 86 years. She peacefully left this world in her own home, with those she loved around her.

At her request, there are no services. The family will gather in the summer of 2009 for a memorial. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

She was born October 21, 1922 in Fort Worth, Texas. Her family moved to Glendale, CA and then moved to Grants Pass when she was 8 years old. They made the journey from Los Angeles to Grants Pass in a Model T Ford Coupe, Virginia rode in the rumble seat for the entire 3-day-long trip.

Virginia shared many stories of her childhood in Grants Pass, including picking gooseberries at the Leigh Farm and spending Saturday afternoons at the Rivoli Theater for the Amateur Show and feature films, all for 5 cents and her “Silver Star” Club badge. At age 11 or 12 she started spending her summer days swimming at Riverside Park. It was during this time that she met A.C. Edwards, the brother of her best friend Frances and her future husband. As a teenager, she worked at Blind George’s Newsstand with George Spencer himself. In 1940 she graduated from Grants Pass High School, and then worked for the Smoke Jumper’s Division of the Forest Service. On December 19, 1944 she married A.C. Edwards (also known as Ace) in Durham, North Carolina. They were married for 62 years before Ace passed away in 2007.

Virginia enjoyed eating out, and especially enjoyed all the waitresses at Herb’s LaCasita Restaurant. She also enjoyed working in her beautiful yard and flower garden with Priss, her Lhasa Apso. She loved to play cards with her family and friends, and was a master at solving crossword puzzles. She always looked forward to her summer class reunion to visit the high school friends she kept her whole life.

Survivors include a daughter, Glenda Anderson and her husband Gary of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; a son, Brad Edwards of Wilsonville, Oregon; a granddaughter, Suzanne Lemasters and her husband Grant of San Diego, California; a great-grandson, Alastair McNamara of San Diego, California; a brother-in-law, Glenn Edwards and his wife Linda of Grants Pass; and a sister-in-law, Lucille Cummins of Grants Pass. She is also survived by many friends, especially Wendy Guidry who took such good care of her at the end of her life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ace Edwards; a brother, Robert ReGester; and a grandson, Todd Crow.
