Lawrence Boniface Kalahui Smythe

Larry Boniface Kalahui Smythe, age 72, died Wednesday, September 14, 2011, at Three Rivers Community Hospital.

Larry was born July 7, 1939 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He attended elementary and secondary schools in Hawaii, including St. Louis Catholic Marianist School and was a graduate of Kaimuki High School. He married Johnny E. Wardlaw and in 1975, he moved to Rogue River, Oregon. He attended Rogue River Catholic Community.

He was a master brick mason and worked most of his life for construction companies located in Kwajalein, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Hawaii, Alaska, and Oregon. In Honolulu, Larry was member of a Canoe Club and enjoyed surfing and diving. As a young man, he taught surfing to tourists on the Waikiki shores. He was an avid car enthusiast and enjoyed attending NASCAR races in Atlanta, Georgia. He loved traveling, cooking and sharing time with his family at barbeques.

Larry is survived by his wife, Johnny, two children, LeiMomi Ferrill of Las Vegas and Wesley Smythe of Grants Pass; three grandchildren, Meghan and Brennan Foley of Atlanta, and Samuel Smythe of Grants Pass; two brothers, Nick and Wayne Smythe; sisters, Pam Souza and Inez Blas. His sister, Sharlene Smythe, preceded him in death.

Private services are planned. Arrangements for services are being conducted by Hull & Hull Funeral Directors.

The Smythe family would like to extend a special thank you to Alex C. Ching, M.D. at Oregon Health Sciences University, Donna Brown and Darolyn Brown for their support, Gail Juan for providing the flower lei in keeping with our Hawaiian customs, and to all those family and friends who offered love and support during this time.
