Larry Leroy James

Larry James, age 83, or Grants Pass, died December 1, 2022 in Portland from of an automobile accident on October 19, 2022 in Grants Pass.

A celebration of life will be at 1:00 p.m., January 26, 2023 at Hull & Hull Funeral Directors with Pastor Ken Bern officiating. Private interment will be at the IOOF Cemetery in Grants Pass.

He was born Larry LeRoy James to Floyd and Louise James on January 28, 1939 in North Platte, Nebraska. His family moved to Oregon in August 1945. In September, he began his education at Riverside Elementary School and graduated from Grants Pass High School in 1957. He married “Lena” Evalena May (Gurule) on February 28, 1957 and they were married for 65 years. In 1960, Larry began working for the Oregon State Highway Department as a rear chainman and had his own survey crew. He took extensive courses and worked his way up to a civil engineer, working in Portland. He went to work with Jackson County Public Works in July 1972, where he worked as a party chief on a survey crew; he made utility inspector in 1980 and retired in 1997. Larry enlisted in the National Guard in 1956 through 1964 and earned the rank of Staff Sergeant.

He enjoyed his family, traveling and his dogs. Larry was a man with high integrity. He always told us kids “you are only as good as your word”…words we all live by today. Larry was always up for sharing a good joke and loved to make people laugh. He was loved so much and will be deeply missed by his family and close friends.

Larry is survived by his wife, Lena James; three daughters Deborah Morris of Clatskanie, Oregon, Lorie Ann Galbreath of Grants Pass, Oregon, and Jill Young of Oakridge Oregon; brother Dennis James; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Jerry James.
