Joyce Spangler
1932 – 2022

Joyce Spangler passed away on January 2, 2022. She was just short of 90 years old. She was buried right next to her husband Gary who had just passed away three weeks prior on December 9, 2021.

Gary battled Parkinson’s during his final years. During his last days, Gary was bedridden and Joyce would spend hours at his bedside to keep him company. Didn’t want him to be alone for very long. She was with Gary when he passed.

Joyce did have a son named Ricky from her first marriage to Frank Martinez. Both passed away in California before she moved to Grants Pass.

Joyce lost her dad in 1985 and mom in 2002. Once Joyce’s mom passed away in 2002 at the age of 91, Joyce became the matriarch of the family. She lost her sister Betty in 2003 and sister Marveen in August of 2021. That left her brother Bud Coiner who is the baby of the family at 77 years old.

Joyce was the keeper of the Coiner family heirlooms. Everything in her home had meaning to her. She could tell you something about everything she owned. Who made it, or gave it to her, what occasion, everything was a treasure to her. Her house was filled with memories and mementos of her family history.

Joyce was the daughter of a Pentecostal pastor and religious to the day she died. She attended Solid Rock Church up until her husband was no longer able to leave the house to attend church. She had many friends at the church and she often talked about having lunch after church with friends.

Joyce was always a caring person. She visited people in the hospital on a voluntary basis. She was very crafty, just like her mom was. They spent a lot of time making things together. She had one room in the house dedicated to crafting. Always made homemade cards for birthdays and holidays. I always loved getting her Christmas present every year. A box filled with goodies. Often just crazy stuff, or homemade, or an antique of some sort. Always my favorite present.

Up until the day she died, Joyce wanted to be presentable when she walked out of her bedroom door. She would get up in the morning and put the hot rollers in her hair, put her makeup on and a pretty, sparkly dress. You would have thought she had guests coming over or she was going shopping or to church…No…just wanted to be pretty. One of the instructions to her caretakers was to be sure to get her up at 7 am with fresh coffee so she could get ready for the day.

She was a very special lady and will be missed by many.
