Joseph Vernon Hobson

Former Grants Pass resident, Joseph Vernon Hobson, age 90, of Medford, died Friday, February 24, 2017 at Highland House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Grants Pass.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 6, 2017 at Granite Hill Cemetery in Grants Pass. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

On July 2, 1926 in Colton, California, Joseph was born to Joseph and Ruby (Manbeck) Hobson. He attended Grants Pass High School before being drafted into the United States Army during his senior year. He later completed his GED after returning from the service. His military service took him to the Philippines where he earned the Bronze Service Star and various other medals of valor. While serving in Japan/Asia he and some of his buddies climbed Mt. Fuji (12,388 ft.). He received an honorable discharge in 1946.
On July 2, 1948 (his birthday) he married Carole Eileen Hobson; children from this union include, daughter, Vicki (Marv), sons, Rodney (Heidi), Richard (Rochelle), Randall (Nancy); they later divorced. After the Army, Vern managed Goodyear Tire; then started Ace & Vern’s Tire Shop with Ace McKenzie; later he worked for Redd’s Tire. He married Imogene (Wickersham) Nutting and became a step-father to her children.
Vern was a member of the Grants Pass Lion’s Club. He enjoyed square dancing, deer hunting, tool collecting, watching sports, old cars and camping.

Survivors include his daughter, Vicki (Marv) of Prineville, Oregon; sons, Rodney (Heidi) and Richard (Rochelle) both of Medford, Oregon; and daughter-in-law, Nancy of Grants Pass, Oregon; step-children, Virgil, Pat, Jack and Ivan Nutting and Sandra Ratcliff, Juanita Conklin, Gloria Ratcliff, Vicki Lallo, Julie Nutting, Tammy Blenkush and Kim Reese; ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Violet Rathbone; wife, Imogene; and his son, Randall.
