John Ewald Scholfield

John Ewald Scholfield, age 76, of Grants Pass, died Friday, May 26, 2017 at his home.

John was born October 20, 1940 in Glendale, California to John & Irene (Ewald) Scholfield. He graduated from Eagle Rock High School in Eagle Rock, California. On January 24, 1958 in Pasadena he married his high school sweetheart, Diana Susan Cliborn. John followed in his father’s footsteps and became a firefighter for the Los Angeles City Fire Department from November 24, 1962 until his retirement on May 30, 1992. While working as a firefighter, he also was a general contractor in Los Angeles; owned Egor’s Bar in Ventura; and owned and operated Scholfield’s Solar; and a 12-unit apartment building. He moved from Ojai, California to Grants Pass nine years ago.

For years John was a custom home builder in the 1980s and was recognized for building more homes in Ventura than other contractors. As an entrepreneur, he owned and operated Ojai Horse Alfalfa Cube Company.

He was a member and past-president of the Beaver Ambassador Club (a motor coach travel club) and a member of the Channel Island Carvers.

His hobbies included beekeeping, carving, scuba diving, pheasant hunting, and traveling. He especially enjoyed a road trip to Alaska. While living in the Keys, he spent most weekends sailing to Alberts Cove on Santa Cruise Island in the Channel Islands.

In addition to his wife, Diana Scholfield of Grants Pass, Oregon; he is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Scholfield of Grants Pass; a son, Robert John Scholfield of Oceanside, California; a sister, Gayle McDonald of Palm Springs, California; three grandchildren, Matthew McLaren, Kristopher McLaren and Kimberly Dickson and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant son in 1958.

A service will be at 11:00 a.m., June 3, 2017 at Hull & Hull Funeral Directors. Private interment will be at Wilderville Cemetery in Grants Pass.
