Joan was born February 23, 1934 near Euston Station in London, England to William & Annie Martin, the third child and the only girl of seven children. She was very strong and athletic, being good at sports, and was the captain of the school rounders team, played on the netball team, played tennis, and competed in the WOL Women’s Tennis Tournament. She also served as Head Girl at school. At age 19, she married Kenneth Salter and they had eight children, six girls and two boys. In 1962 they emigrated to Australia and in 1965 came to the United States and raised their children in Southern California where they enjoyed their swimming pool and horses. In 1976 she returned to England with the three youngest children for six months and continued on to explore Spain riding bicycles carrying clothes, tent, and sleeping bags. When they returned to England she met missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and was baptized on December 24, 1976. In the mid 80’s she moved to Rogue River. In 1990 she served a church mission in the Macon Georgia Mission. Being an avid traveler, she has traveled to England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Paris, Bordeaux and across the south of France, Berlin, Frieburg, Heidelberg, Rothamberg, Strasbourg, Prague, Budapest, Vienna, Salsburg and Brussels, Amsterdam, Basel, Neuchatel, Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, Brugge, Rome, Pisa, Florence and Venice.

She greatly enjoyed serving as a Cub Scout Den Leader and Cub Master for many years. Her hobbies included sewing, ballroom dancing, swimming, tennis and traveling. She loved to sing and enjoyed listening to music, especially the great vocalists. Her greatest blessings were her husband, children and grandchildren.
