Jesse R. Calvert Jr

Jesse R. Calvert, Jr, age 90, of Grants Pass, died Thursday, September 20, 2012 at an adult foster home.

A funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m., Monday, September 24, 2012 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church with Father Todd Young officiating. Private interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

Jesse was born June 3, 1922 in Grants Pass. In 1939 he graduated from Grants Pass High School and then attended college and law school at Stanford University. In 1943 he enlisted in the United States Army and served proudly in World War II. After his Army discharge in 1946, he returned to Stanford to complete law school. He then returned to Grants Pass and joined Bill Balderree in the law practice. In 1943 he married Annabel Gray and they had five children before Annabel died in 1966. In 1967 he married Jeanne V. Davis, who survives. In 1973 he opened his own law office and in 1975 his stepson, Jack Davis joined him in the practice. Later Jesse’s son, Brian Calvert joined the firm as well.

His memberships included the Oregon State Bar from 1948 until his retirement in 1983; Rotary Club; Grants Pass Golf Club; Grants Pass School District #7 school board; and was active in the Boy Scouts when his children were growing up.

Jesse enjoyed boating, fishing, golf, hunting, and ham radio.

In addition to his wife, Jeanne V. Calvert of Grants Pass, Oregon; he is survived by five sons, James Lee Calvert and Steven Calvert both of Grants Pass, Jesse R. Calvert III “Terry” of Murphy, Oregon; William Calvert of Florence, Oregon; and Brian Calvert of Richland, Washington; a stepson, Jack Davis of Grants Pass, Oregon; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife, Annabel Calvert.
