James Robert Platt

James Robert Platt, age 78, of Grants Pass, died Sunday, March 4, 2012 at Three Rivers Community Hospital.

A viewing will be from 1:00 p.m. to service time, Friday, March 9, 2012 at Hull & Hull Funeral Directors.

A funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 9, 2012 at Hull & Hull Chapel. Interment will follow at Hawthorne Memorial Gardens.

James was born October 14, 1933 in Los Angeles, California to Roy & Lora Platt. After graduating from high school, he went to work at Reddi Spuds, his parents’ family owned business which he operated after his father’s death in 1962. He also drove truck for Rocky Home Dairy in Lakeside, California. In 1955 in San Diego, California while serving in the Navy Seabees he married Evelyn Root. James later worked for the San Diego Sherriff’s office for 12 years; was a self-employed long haul trucker traveling across the United States and drove truck for Ramon’s Bottled Water Company until his retirement. In 1996 he moved from Ramona, California to Grants Pass.

During his youth he was very active in his church youth group and church activities. He was a member of the San Diego Sherriff’s Department reserves.

James enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and playing the trumpet. He especially loved spending time with his kids and grandkids. He was known by many as “Teddy Bear” and “Old Jim.”

In addition to his wife, Evelyn Grace Platt of Grants Pass, Oregon; he is survives by a son, Jim Platt of Azalea, Oregon; four daughters, Denise Clark of Eagle Point, Oregon, Sharon Cliffman of Redding, California, Cheryl Buller of Redding, California, and Michele Platt of Grants Pass, Oregon; a sister, Phyllis Dufresne of Reno, Nevada; a brother, Earl Platt of Pleasantville, California; and 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Joe Platt.
