James Doyle Tandy

James Doyle Tandy, 80, died December 13, 2011 at his home in Cave Junction.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 17 at 1 PM at the Illinois Valley Funeral Directors Chapel, 26569 Redwood Highway in Cave Junction.

He was born in Los Angeles, California on August 15, 1931 and spent his early childhood in nearby Glendale. His father was in the Air Force and the family moved several times. It was in Virginia that he received his first chemistry set and began a life-long love affair with science. He went to college in Norman, Oklahoma and then studied physics in Los Angeles at UCLA, which led to an aerospace engineering career. He went on to own a flooring business and a bar, then retired and worked for the Forest Service. In 1953 he married Mary Lou Wagner. They were divorced in 1970. He moved to Cave Junction, Oregon in 2006.

Jim Tandy loved the outdoors and could outhike many a younger man. He also loved big-band music and had a passion for words and intellectual discussion.

He is survived by two daughters, Linda Tandy-Mertz and Susan Haroutunian, and four grandchildren, Devin Tandy and Isabelle, Philip and Camille Haroutunian.
