Harold William Clouse

Harold William “Red” Clouse, Jr., 82, of Grants Pass, died Wednesday, February 28, 2007 at his home.

A funeral service will be at 2:00 pm, Saturday, March 10, 2007 at Merlin Community Baptist Church with Pastor Everett Denniston officiating. Private interment will be at Eagle Point National Cemetery. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

Harold was born May 16, 1924 in Pasadena, California. In November 1941 he joined the United States Navy and was discharged in 1945. During his deployment, he served on the USS Vestal and Argonne, and was 44 months in the South Pacific. In 1949 he joined the Pasadena Fire Department and in 1955 transferred to the Los Angeles City Fire Department. He worked as a firefighter during the Watts Riots, Bel Aire fire, and the 1970 San Fernando earthquake. On March 12, 1969 in Canoga Park, California he married the former Marilynn Gillis. Upon his retirement in September 1975 from the Los Angeles City Fire Department, he moved to Grants Pass. While in Grants Pass, Harold drove school bus for Laidlaw for one year and was a contractor for 13 years.

He was a member of Merlin Community Baptist Church, Disabled American Veterans and American Legion.

His hobbies included golf, fishing, woodworking, baseball, dune buggying, hunting, and other outdoor activities.

Survivors include his wife, Marilynn Clouse of Colonial Valley; two sons, Clifford Clouse of Yreka, California and Hugh Gillis of Grants Pass; three daughters, Bonnie York and Jan Salin both of Yreka, California and Susan Gillis of Merlin; a sister, Elaine Tessone of West Covina, California; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
