Glorie Russell

Former Merlin resident, Glorie Russell, age 96, of Napa, California died Sunday, October 16, 2011 in Napa.

Private interment will be at Granite Hill Cemetery. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

Glorie was born February 6, 1915 in Merlin, Oregon to Dexter & Della Russell. In 1932 she moved from Merlin to California. She attended San Jose State University and Columbia University in New York City. After 40 years of teaching elementary school she retired in 1977 from Napa Valley Unified School District. For a number of years she was a tutor in the Literacy Project and also taught English as a second language.

Glorie was a life member of the California Teachers Association; was active in Young Audiences; Napa-Iwanuma Sister Cities of which she was a charter member; American Association of University Women; and the First Presbyterian Church all in Napa, California.

Glorie traveled extensively by bicycle touring Europe, Mexico and Alaska.

Survivors include a sister-in-law and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Joy, Glen, Donald, Dexter Jr, and Wayne. Glorie was the last of her generation.
