Gladys was born November 9, 1924 in Lansford, North Dakota to Carl & Christine (Neilsen) Braun. Her parents came from Spain to Denmark, met on the ship to America and married when they arrived in the United States. They settled in Nebraska and moved to North Dakota into a sod shanty. Gladys graduated from high school in Minot, North Dakota, and then moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming where she met and married Howard James McAlister, who was stationed there in the United States Army.

They later moved to Reedsport, Oregon to a home that was only accessible by boat eventually settling in the Hugo area in 1951. Howard passed away in December 1962 and that is when Gladys started her floral career at Alma’s Florist Shop and later worked for Probst, Rogue River Florist, and Chet’s. She raised her four boys by herself until they were grown. She then married Darwin M. Ting who joined her in boating in Bandon, crafts, rocks, and floral work until Darwin passed away in August 2004.

Gladys was well known and respected for her unique floral designs and compassion in funeral arrangements throughout the community. She continued her floral designs for her family’s weddings and celebrations. She loved her needlework, crocheting, gardening, and was an incredible cook with her cinnamon rolls, dinner rolls, pies and cookies.

Surviving children are her four sons, Michael and wife Bobbi of Grants Pass, Oregon, Scott and wife Rhonda of Lebanon, Oregon, Gregory and wife Emily of Grants Pass, Oregon and Anthony and wife Kelly of Sunny Valley, Oregon; a brother, David Braun of Vashon, Washington; and a sister, Edie Canoy of Cottage Grove, Oregon. She loved her family, nieces, nephews, and kept a very active life with her 9 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death was Howard J. McAlister; an infant son buried in Reedsport; Darwin M. Ting; brothers, Carl, Alvin, Lester, Harry, Elmer, Melvin, and George; and sister, Emma.
