Gilbert Judson

February 7, 1917 — March 12, 2010

Gilbert (Gil) Edwin Judson, age 93, of Grants Pass, died Friday, March 12, 2010 of natural causes in Grants Pass.

Military honors will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 18, 2010 at Eagle Point National Cemetery. A memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, March 18, 2010 at Rogue Valley Community Church in Rogue River.

Gil was born in Rapid City, South Dakota, on February 7, 1917, to Albert Allen Judson and Louise Lindeman Judson. He spent his early years in Kansas and moved to Chicago, Illinois, after graduation from Winfield High School. He married Barbara Sweeney, in Fort Worth, Texas, on February 21, 1941. They later moved to Southern California where they raised their four daughters. During this time the family spent many happy hours boating, water-skiing, camping and fishing. One of the high points of Gil’s fishing experiences was a record breaking fish catch at Lake Crowley, California. A Life Member of the NRA, he was a gun collector and enjoyed hunting.

After 32 years of working at Rockwell International, Gil retired and he and Barbara moved to the Grants Pass area where he continued his love of the outdoors and no fish was safe from his wicked use of Panther Martin lures. Gil, also known as Jud, spent many happy years with Barbara at their home on Savage Creek Road. He was known by friends and neighbors to own and know how to use every tool available to man and was always willing to lend a helping hand.

Gil was a longtime member of the organizing committee for the annual locally held NAA/Rockwell Retirees Picnic. He was active in the Kiwanis, where he was known for his joke telling and was also a member of the Elks Club where he greatly enjoyed many Monday night games of pool. In his later years, he especially looked forward to a monthly poker game with great friends.

In 2004, Barbara, his wife of 63 years, preceded him in death. His stepsister, Vera Harvey Wise, and brothers, Albert Loren Judson and Leroy Judson also preceded him in death. He is survived by his sister, Maxine Louise Grimes of Tucson, Arizona, daughters, Judith Ann Welch (Scott) of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Patricia Judson, of Fullerton, California, Catherine Louise Wyrick (Chris), of Norco, California, and Peggy Jean Nelson, of Santa Cruz, California, 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
