George Frederick Long Ii

George Frederick Long II, age 71 was born January 25, 1950 in the District of Columbia to George & Wilma Long. In 1968 after graduating from DuVal High School in Lanham, Maryland he joined the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia and Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri before transferring to Can Tho, Vietnam from 1970 to 1971 as an SP/4 military policeman. Upon returning from Vietnam, he worked on the bomb squad and as a detective for the U.S. Capitol Police. In 1976 he moved to Denver, Colorado enrolling in Gunsmithing School. He then moved to Monte Vista, Colorado in 1977 where he was a sergeant with the Monte Vista Police Department. He met and married Patricia Bond in 1978 and they lived in Del Norte, Colorado until his medical retirement from the MVPD in 1979. At that time, they moved to Frederick, Maryland where he worked as a pistolsmith with Maryland Gun Works. George Raymond Long II was born to George & Patricia in 1982 in Frederick, Maryland. In 1984 the family moved to Grants Pass, where he opened Long’s Guns and did gunsmithing and custom pistolsmithing until 2005.

George became nationally recognized and was voted into the American Pistolsmith’s Guild in 1983 and in 2017 was awarded Pistolsmith of the Year by his peers. He is a life member of the 720th Military Police Battalion Reunion Association, life member of the NRA, and a life member of the Rogue Valley Flyers. He volunteered his time in past years in Grants Pass as Match Director for the NRA silhouette matches and President and instructor for the Rogue Valley Flyers. George and his family enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, and flying RC airplanes. He and his wife enjoyed riding motorcycles from the time they met.

Survivors include his wife Patricia Long of Grants Pass; son George Raymond Long II (Che’ri) of Ellensburg, Washington; siblings Karin Bergeron (Bob) of Westport, Massachusetts, David Long (Kristie) of Keyser, West Virginia and Bobbi Jo Starry of Youngstown, Ohio; and a grandson Samuel David Long of Ellensburg, Washington. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A private funeral service will be on March 6, 2021 at Hull & Hull Funeral Directors in Grants Pass.

A private interment with military honors will be on March 19, 2021 at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.
