Eugene L. Kern

Eugene L. Kern, age 88, passed away on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014 at his home in Grants Pass, Oregon.

Eugene Leland Kern was born on February 4, 1926 to Arthur Leland and Hazel Nona Kern in Oswego, Kansas. Gene was the oldest of five sons.

On March 3, 1943 when Gene was 17 years of age, he enlisted into the U.S. Naval Service with his Father’s approval. Gene was honorably discharged from the U.S. Naval Personnel Separation Center on March 9, 1946 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Gene attended a number of Navy Air Force Schools, becoming First Ordinance and Aerial Gunner aboard a Liberator, P.B.4Y1. His squadron received the Presidential Citation for the most planes shot down, ships sunk, and damage to the enemy.

On October 17, 1952 Gene was certified as a Machinist Apprentice for Southern Pacific Lines in Los Angeles, California.

Gene served four years with the Utility Commission in Rocklin, California. He also served four years on the Rocklin School Board, was Commander of the American Legion Post #620, as well as, served two years as Service Officer for Placer County.

Gene resigned in 1958 from Southern Pacific Lines, after serving 10 years. Gene went to work for Aerojet in Sacramento, California in July of 1958. Gene retired from Aerojet on August 7, 1987, after 30 years of service.

On May 30, 1990 Gene married Rosilind “Rosie” Angulo in Reno, Nevada.

Gene and Rosie moved from Klamath, California to Brookings, Oregon in 1991, there they bought property and built their dream home. They resided there for 17 years before moving to Grants Pass, Oregon in June of 2010, due to health issues.

Survivors include: his wife, Rosie Kern of Grants Pass, OR, son, Roger Kern of Playa Del Rey, CA, daughter, Marialice Kern of Moraga, CA, three brothers; Richard Kern of Laguna Hills, CA, Tom Kern of San Clemente, CA and David Kern of San Clemente, CA, two grandchildren; James Kern of Santa Monica, CA and Katrin {Katie} Kern of Los Angeles, CA, as well as, many nephews and nieces.

A viewing will be from 3:00 p.m., to 5:00 p.m., Monday, April 28, 2014 at Hull & Hull Funeral Directors.

A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at Hull & Hull Chapel. Interment will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Eagle Point National Cemetery.
