Eugene Victor “Gene” Vogel, age 73, of Selma, died May 23, 2019 in Eugene after a short battle with cancer.
Gene was born April 1, 1946 in Chicago, Illinois to Virgil & Ida Vogel. In 1969 he married Deborah Newell and in 1972 they bought land and homesteaded in Selma. He worked a variety of jobs in Chicago and Seattle and for the forest service while living in Selma. In 1980 he and Deborah opened Tierra Del Sol in Grants Pass.
Gene loved to travel and was able to sell handcrafted items he bought in South America in the store and at fairs, college campuses, and Grateful Dead concerts. He eventually sold the store and started a wholesale import business selling clothing and jewelry from mainly Thailand and Bali.
Gene enjoyed hiking, backpacking, camping, gardening, cooking for friends and family, solving crossword puzzles, playing scrabble and traveling.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister Carol Ann Mahaffey, and his life partner Deborah Newell.
He is survived by his children Adam Vogel and Elizabeth Williams both of Cave Junction; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He is deeply missed by friends and family.
