Effie Viola Ried, age 79, of Grants Pass, died Sunday, July 13, 2008 at Oak Lane Retirement Home.

A celebration of life will be at 5:00 p.m., Saturday, September 20, 2008 at Riverside Park lower pavilion with a finger food potluck to follow from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. For any questions, please call the family at 479-1759. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

Effie was born September 24, 1928 in Grants Pass to Howard & Ida Edson. She attended schools from 1st through 7th grade in Merlin and moved to Glendale in 1940, graduating from Glendale High School in 1946. On May 24, 1946 in Glendale she married Richard “Dick” Ried and they had a son, Donald E. Ried in 1947. In 1957 they moved to Grants Pass. After living in several places, they finally settled in 1965 on Rounds Avenue where they began 4 Aces Breeding & Training Stable. Their first stud was a POA (Ponies of America). They later acquired a paint and pinto stud, 4 Aces Dan, then 4 Aces Forecaster and presently 4 Aces Rebel.

Effie served as a Pinto National Inspector and raised several Pinto/Paint and POA National Champions. She started the Saddle Bumpers 4-H Horse Club and was Open Horse Superintendent for several years at Josephine County Fair. She was also secretary for Northwest Regional POA (Ponies of America). She was also a member of Eastern Star Chapter 71 where she served as worthy matron in Glendale and a member of Redwood Country Church.

Her hobbies included horses, animals, going to the coast and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include husband, Richard “Dick” Ried of Grants Pass; a son, Don Ried of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi; a brother, Howard Edson of Reedsport; two granddaughters; and her family by choice, Jim & Linda Jesinghaus and their daughters, Monica Jesinghaus of Medford and Jessica Johnson and her husband Dan and their children, Troy & Dana all of Grants Pass.
