Edward Raymond Strand, age 81, of Grants Pass, died Friday, December 5, 2014 at his home.

A memorial service will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 13, 2014 at Hull & Hull Funeral Directors with Rev. Patt Herdklotz officiating.

Ed was born September 21, 1933 in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho to Carl Raymond Strand & Florence Elizabeth (Barton) Strand and grew up in Tieton, Washington. From 1951 to 1953 he served in the United States Army. He then put himself through Stanford University by driving a truck with Miles & Sons, and graduated with a B.A. in Psychology in 1961. After finishing college, Ed took a trip around the world, and visited many fascinating countries and cities, such as Egypt, Iran, Turkey, Burma, India and Hong Kong. In 1966 Ed, along with his business partner, Jim Long, founded Mountain View Garden Center. They grew to become the largest landscape suppliers in the Silicon Valley during the 1970s and 80s. Ed met Carol at Towne Oak Restaurant in Sunnyvale, California in 1980, had their first date on September 21, 1983 and were married on December 27, 1989. They lived in Grants Pass for 24 years.

Ed was an avid collector and restorer of classic cars and over the years he had some legendary cars in his collection, such as a 1936 Cord, a 1937 Packard, and a 1940 Lincoln Continental (the 29th Continental ever built).

He was a member of the Elks Club for many years.

Ed is survived by his wife, Carol; his children, Steve (and wife, Kristie), Eric, and Karen; stepson, Alex (and wife, Bernie); four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
