Edward Gerald Dougan

Edward Gerald Dougan, age 87, of Grants Pass, died February 15, 2020 at Asante Three Rivers Medical Center.

Edward was born May 17, 1932 in Saugus, Massachusetts. He moved from Nantucket Island Massachusetts where he called home since he married into the Island in 1954. He attended schools in or near Boston until he contracted polio in 1949. Though he was wearing a leg brace he was inducted into the Air Force during the Korean War in 1951. He served in the dental corps until his 1973 retirement. He served overseas in the Territory of Alaska in 1952; England in 1955, where his two children were born; Korea in 1966; Vietnam in 1969; and Panama in 1971. After retirement he completed an Associate’s degree at Midplains Community College in Nebraska. He then served as a Baha’i pioneer for 15 years in Panama for two of those years he was the caretaker for the Baha’i House of Worship for Central America. He was a lecturer at the Whaling Museum on Nantucket for many years ang gave guided tours of the historical places on Nantucket. His first wife Anita (Stackpole) died in 1992 and he later married Anita’s best friend, Andrea (Merrill) in 1993 on Nantucket. In 2007 they moved to Grants Pass.

His memberships were Baha’i Faith, Nantucket Historical Association; Josephine County Historical Society; and Boy Scouts. He volunteered his time with the Boy Scouts and the American Red Cross.

His hobbies included basket weaving and fishing.

Survivors include his wife Andrea Dougan of Grants Pass; children Diana M Southard and Dwayne Dougan both of Nantucket, Massachusetts; grandchildren Jeff Fox, Levi Fox, Jason Fox, Matthew Dougan, Anita Dougan and Tessa Dougan; great-grandchildren Griffin Fox, Ellamay Fox, Shane Fox and Loralie Fox.

He was preceded in death by his parents Effie & James Dougan; brother James Dougan and sister Marcia Frado.

A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m., March 29, 2020 at the Yates Residence.

Private interment with military honors was held at Eagle Point National Cemetery.
