Douglas E. Fosbury

Douglas E. Fosbury, age 95, of Grants Pass, died June 15, 2017 of natural causes at the Bridge Retirement Community.

Doug was born April 14, 1922 in Portland, Oregon. He graduated from Commerce High School (now Cleveland) in 1941 where he was a member of the football, basketball, and track teams. In September 1942, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he served in the Marines 10th defense battalion in the South Pacific Theater. He returned to the states in October 1944 attending the Marine Corps School in Quantico, Virginia where he achieved the rank of 2nd lieutenant. He was honorably discharged in October 1945. On October 28, 1944, he married Helen Childers and they later divorced. In 1966, he moved to Grants Pass and married Mildred “Jean” Johnson who preceded him in death. Doug started working for Haupert Tractor Company of Medford in 1954 where he was a credit manager until the mid-1960s. He then went to work for Witham’s in Medford as a Truck Salesman until he retired in the 1970s. At that time, he started Fosbury Trucking Company and hauled logs from 1978 through 1988.

Doug was a member of the Marine Corps League, Oregon Hunters Association, and the Grants Pass Elks Lodge #1584. He also was a square dance caller with the Y Knot Twirlers and Circles and Squares Clubs locally and regionally. Doug loved bowling and never forgot his perfect “300” game in League.

Doug loved to hunt in Oregon, Idaho, and Wyoming, and fish, especially out of Brookings Harbor and Alaska.

Survivors include a son, Dick Fosbury of Bellevue, Idaho; a daughter, Gail Bizeau of Moscow, Idaho; two stepsons, Richard Johnson of Rogue River, Oregon and Steve Johnson of Monroe, Oregon; a stepdaughter, Nancy Willis of Morehead City, North Carolina; grandchildren, DeEtta Fosbury of Portland, Oregon, Erich Fosbury of Redmond, Oregon; Stephanie Phipps of Orange, California and Kristin Thompson of Albany, Georgia; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Greg Fosbury at the age of 10 in 1961.

A committal service with military honors will be at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, July 6, 2017 at Eagle Point National Cemetery.
