October 8, 1950 — May 5, 2019

Douglas D. Day

Doug was born October 8, 1950 to David & Bea Day in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Doug attended college at Washburn University in Kansas and graduated in 1972 with a degree in English. After graduating he went directly into the United States Air Force and served as a navigator on the KC-135 tankers that refueled the SR-71’s. He was honorably discharged while stationed at Beale Air Force Base in Sacramento, California in April 1981 with a rank of Captain.

Doug moved to Moreno Valley, California for a new job and was very active in the community with Rotary and Chamber of Commerce. In 1982 Doug met his future wife Judy and they were married in 1983.

Shortly after the birth of their son David in 1985 they moved to Grants Pass, Oregon where Doug purchased a nursery business which he sold a year later. In 1989 Doug and Judy had their second child Daniel and Doug went to work for Sharp’s Tarps as a driver. He worked for the company for 21 years until illness forced him to retire.

His hobbies included gardening, cooking, canning, golf, photography and weather.

He loved and was proud of his son’s David and Daniel and was delighted to be a grandfather to David’s two children Benning and Lynlee.

Doug is survived by his former wife Judy Day of Grants Pass; two sons David Day and his fiancé Amanda Hovey of Riverton, Utah and Daniel Day of Grants Pass; two grandchildren Benning Day and Lynlee Day both of Riverton, Utah; a sister Linda Linn of Davenport, Iowa; and a good friend Kendon Leet and family of Grants Pass.

He was preceded in death by his parents David & Bea Day.

Doug passed away peacefully on May 5, 2019 at Royale Gardens after losing his battle against ALS. The family would like to thank all the staff at Royale Gardens and Asante Hospice for caring for Doug during those final months and days.

Remembrances may be made to ALS research or Diabetes.

A graveside service with military honors will be at 10:00 a.m., May 31, 2019 at Eagle Point National Cemetery in Eagle Point, Oregon.
