Dorothy Virginia Wilber

July 26, 1921 — March 24, 2012

Dorothy Virginia Wilber, age 90, of Grants Pass, Oregon died Saturday, March 24, 2012 at Highland House Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, April 14, 2012 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

Remembrances may be made to any Battered Women’s Shelter.

Dorothy was born July 26, 1921 in Niles, Michigan to John & Helen Scanlan. In 1939 she graduated from Central Senior High School in South Bend, Indiana and soon after moved to Hialeah, Florida. During World War II she worked as both a “Rosie the Riveter” and a waitress in Miami, Florida. In 1958 in Miami she married Edwin Wilber, who preceded her in death. She worked as a mail clerk at Hialeah Hospital until her retirement. She then moved to Belleview, Florida where she lived until 1997 when she moved to Grants Pass, Oregon.

Dorothy was a member of the Moose Lodge and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church both in Grants Pass.

Her hobbies included reading, crossword puzzles, music, dancing, and yard sales. Her favorite place was “Top of the Mark” Restaurant in San Francisco, California.

Survivors include a son, Spence Spivey of Jacksonville, Florida; a daughter, Amber Watkins of Grants Pass, Oregon; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Ed Wilber; she was preceded in death by her parents, John & Helen Scanlan; two brothers, John Scanlan and Samuel Scanlan; four sisters, Isabell Verhostra, Margret Galloway, Helen Galloway, and Margret Scanlan.
