Dorothy Jean Kamenicky

Dorothy Jean Kamenicky, age 85, of Grants Pass, died February 9, 2020 at Regency Care of Rogue Valley.

Jean was born August 27, 1934 in Glendale, California to Charles Edward "Bampa" & Elizabeth Louise “BB” (Peisch) Hollingworth. She was raised in Pasadena, California where she attended San Rafael Elementary, McKinley Junior High School and John Muir High School. She attended University of Redlands (CA) her freshman year before transferring to USC where she graduated from in 1955 with a BS degree in education/physical education.

Jean was married in 1955 and had three children, Melinda Jean, Jenny Lynn and Michael Christian. In the 1960s, Jean taught elementary school in Indio, California and the early 1970s in Grants Pass, Oregon after moving to Grants Pass from Palm Desert and Pasadena in 1970. She acquired ownership of the Beauty Supply of Grants Pass in the early 1980s and sold it to retire in 1989. After selling the Beauty Supply, Jean concentrated on her beloved Romney sheep flock tending them and showing them at various fairs and festivals, mostly on the west coast but occasionally across the country.

Jean was a member of the American Romney Breeders Association where for nine years she served as registrar/secretary/treasurer. She was also a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority; Oregon Romney Breeders Association; and Oregon Sheep Breeders.

Jean loved her Romney sheep, spinning their wool, knitting and weaving. She especially enjoyed gatherings with her spinning friends.

She is survived by her children Melinda (Bob) Matson, Jenny (Tom) Hull and Mike (Jona) Fikso all of Grants Pass; five granddaughters Andrea Matson, Karlie Matson, Jessica Hull, Haley (Jordan) Kasler and Kara (Tom) Hamlik; and a great-grandson Cohen Kasler.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Elizabeth Ann “Bo” Moore.

A funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m., February 22, 2020 at Hull & Hull Funeral Directors. Private interment will be at Hawthorne Memorial Gardens.
