Daniel R. "Dan" Mclean

July 20, 1958 — June 6, 2016

Daniel R. McLean, 57, passed away in Grants Pass, Ore. on June 6, 2016, at Autumn House Memory Care Facility.

Dan was born in Oakland, Calif. on July 20, 1958, to Thomas and Imeldine McLean. He was the sixth of seven children. Dan’s family moved to Grants Pass when he was five.

Dan graduated from Grants Pass High School in 1976 and attended both Southern Oregon University and University of Oregon. As a Financial Advisor for Edward Jones, he was actively involved in the community. Dan was the president of the Grants Pass Kiwana’s Club in 2000 and 2001. Dan was also a member of the Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, Family Friends, Red Cross, and Southern Oregon Fly Fishers.

His passions included riding his motorcycle, traveling the world, playing golf, telling jokes, playing guitar, fishing, and volunteering his time teaching children.

Dan’s two greatest joys in life were his relationship with God and his family. He devoted time to being on staff for mission trips to Mexico and leading small groups at church. Dan was present at almost every one of the countless sporting events his kids participated in from cross-country and track meets to wrestling tournaments throughout the country. He will be remembered as a devoted father that ensured the family was around the table for dinner every night. Dan engaged in conversation about the high and low points of the day and instilled the importance of family. By his actions, he taught his family to actively listen, interact and care for one another.

In recent years, Dan developed a close relationship with each of his five grandchildren, making each of them feel special in their own way. He enjoyed reading to them, sharing his fruit bowls, and playing the guitar and singing countless songs with them. Each of Dan’s grandchildren will have special memories of their Papa that they can carry with them throughout their lives.

Dan was a devoted husband of 38 years to his bride Cathy McLean. Their marriage has inspired their children to enjoy the great times in life and work through the hard times. Even as Dan battled Alzheimer’s over the past eight years, he continued to teach his family life lessons and Cathy continued to teach their family what the meaning of true love and commitment is. Dan appreciated her every day of his life.

Dan is preceded in death by his mother, Imeldine McLean, his sister, Lorraine McLean, his brother, Gregory McLean, and his sister-in-law, Alanna McLean.

He is survived by his wife, Cathy McLean, his children: Christie Hill (Jonathan) and Jeremy McLean (Leah), and grandchildren: Daniel McLean, Landon McLean, Kylynn McLean, Zane Hill, and Lucas Hill. He is also survived by his father, Thomas McLean, his sister Pegi Howell (Farley), brothers: Damian McLean, John McLean, and Jim McLean (Debbie).

A Celebration of Life Memorial will be held on Saturday June 11, 2016, at 1:00 p.m., at Edgewater Church Office, located at 101 Assembly Circle, Grants Pass, Ore. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org/) or Family Solutions (http://familysolutionsoregon.org/).
