Calvin L. Hill

June 24, 1923 — November 20, 2014

The Provolt-Williams area lost a local treasure with the passing of Calvin L. Hill, age 91, of Williams, on Thursday, November 20, 2014 at his home.

Born at Sacred Heart Hospital in Medford on June 24, 1923, Cal grew up on his family’s farm near Provolt. At age 18, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he served his country in the Pacific Theatre. He was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds received in the battle for the Gilbert Islands.

After returning home he attended classes at the University of California at Berkeley, where he met the love of his life, Jeanne Elizabeth Howell. They returned to the Hill Family Farm in Provolt where they raised their three sons: Robert, Richard and David. Cal worked the farm in the morning hours and commuted to Medford where he worked swing shift at Timber Products for 26 years.

In 1997, Cal and Jeanne left the farm and moved to a home overlooking the west fork of Williams Creek. In 2008 Jeanne passed away after the two of them enjoyed nearly 63 years of marriage.

An avid horseman, Calvin bought his first horse when he was twelve and sold his last one when he was 85. Generous to a fault, Cal was notorious for buying high and selling low. He loved ballroom dancing, a pursuit he continued until declining health sidelined him at the age of 90. He told family and friends that he was most at peace hiking the forested trails of the Pacific Northwest.

Calvin is survived by three sons; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He will be laid to rest alongside Jeanne in the Missouri Flat Cemetery in a private ceremony.

A Celebration of Life will be from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday, March 28, 2015 at Plaisance Ranch, 16955 Watergap Road, Williams, Oregon.

Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.
