Betty J. Collin, age 95, of Grants Pass, died Saturday, January 26, 2013 at Three Rivers Medical Center.

Private services will be held at a later date. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

Betty was born July 17, 1917 in Elmira, New York to Clarence Eugene and Hazel Howell Quick. She was the only grandchild of Fred Minier and Louese Hunter Howell. She graduated from Elmira Free Academy in Elmira, New York – Class of 1935. She also graduated from Wheelock College in Boston, Massachusetts with a kindergarten teaching certificate – Class of 1938. From 1938 to 1943 she was employed by the Elmira City School District as a kindergarten teacher at the former Hoffman Street School (#11) which she had attended as a child. From 1943 to 1945 she was employed by the Housing Authority, Oakdale Homes, Hinesville, Georgia as Director and kindergarten teacher for the children of the Fort Stewart civilian employees and sponsored by the Oakdale Mother’s Club. On July 23, 1943 she married Henry Beaumont Collin, Jr. in the Chapel at Fort Stewart, Hinesville, Georgia. In June 1998 she moved from Elmira, New York to Grants Pass, Oregon.

Betty was a long time member of Lake Street Presbyterian Church of Elmira, New York. When she moved to Grants Pass, she attended Merlin Community Baptist Church for many years, where she was known to many children as “Grandma Betty.”

She was a member of the Chemung County Chapter (Elmira, NY) and Applegate Trail Chapter (Grants Pass, OR) of Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of Zonta International, and was very interested in Early Childhood Education, Boy Scouts of America and environmental issues. She enjoyed teaching Sunday school, participating in vacation Bible school, antiquing and reading. Betty was always a lady and loved the Lord Jesus Christ.

Betty is survived by three children and their spouses, Paul Collin (Joan) of Horseheads, New York, Alice Temple (Richard) of Grants Pass, Oregon, and Elaine Kadar (Michael) of Henrietta, New York; and two grandchildren, Sarah Joy and David Kadar both of Henrietta, New York.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Beaumont Collin Jr. in February 1996 and her son, David Collin in 1993.
