Barrie Clegg Layne, Pioneer Oregon grape grower, beloved wife and mother, died September 15th on the family farm in the Applegate Valley. Barrie was born in San Francisco in 1941. She was raised outside Calistoga, California in a large family of 9 siblings. She completed her education at the University of California, Davis with a Bachelor of Science in Bacteriology. After college, she met Roger Layne where they married in 1967. Shortly following the birth of their first son, Cameron, they moved to the Applegate in 1972. After settling, they put down some of the first winegrape roots in Oregon. In 1974, they had their second son, Courtney. Barrie and Roger spent the next 30 years raising their children, cattle ranching and growing grapes. Barrie spent her last years doing what she loved best, working in the vineyard and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
