Artie A. Southern

Artie Agnes Southern, age 89, of Grants Pass, died Thursday, February 2, 2012 at her home.

A memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 11, 2012 at Hull & Hull Funeral Directors.

Remembrances may be made to the Ladies Auxiliary, c/o Veterans of Foreign Wars, PO Box 686, Grants Pass, Oregon 97528 (Attn: Quilting Project).

Artie was born January 22, 1923 in Dodd City, Arkansas to James & Lura Quigley the 2nd of seven children. As a teenager she worked in her father’s sawmill. After moving to Oregon she worked for the telephone company until her marriage to Sam Southern in 1953. After moving to Wolf Creek, Artie drove school bus until moving to Grants Pass where for 20 years she sold Artex and then Tri-Chem paints. She and Sam later lived in Wonder until Sam’s death and Artie moved back to Grants Pass.

Artie was an avid volunteer and was active with veterans organizations including Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Food Bank, and made numerous quilts for the Domiciliary in White City. She will be missed.

Artie flew pigeons for 15 years and was an avid hunter – getting her deer every year until 2008.

She is survived by a brother, David Quigley of Klamath Falls, Oregon; and three sisters, Opal Quigley of Eagle Point, Oregon, Lucille Pratt of Harrison, Arkansas, and Mary Ruth Watkins of Palouse, Washington.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Sam Southern; and two sisters, Kathryn Moore and Mable Bigby.
